In this article, we’ll discuss universal parks for walks that are interesting for both children and adults. The main criteria for adding to the list are a versatile location in a quiet and cozy small town with a thriving tourism industry, various shops, convenient parking, and frequent fairs and festivals. The first thing that comes to mind is the playground at the Rust Library in Leesburg. It will become the benchmark by which all others will be selected. It takes me about 30 minutes to get to Leesburg, but I happily return repeatedly because it has everything for relaxation and entertainment.
Leesburg is unique among cities in that, despite its compact size, the downtown area has a multi-story parking lot and smaller parking lots within walking distance. Various events are often held here, including farmers’ markets and themed events like the Leesburg Air Show or the Halloween trick-or-treating event, when many stores invite children to their stores and give them candy. Oh, and of course, the colorful Halloween Parade takes place annually in Historic Downtown Leesburg at the end of October.

The downtown area offers numerous cafes and restaurants with various cuisines and prices. If you venture away from the downtown area toward the Rust Library, you’ll find an extensive and fun playground for children, a swing area, an indoor area where parties are often held, and the large Mulch Fields area, where you can play and run with your children. Note that a paved walking path runs around the Mulch Fields area. If you explore this area further, you’ll find a large swimming pool at the Ida Lee Park Recreation Center, tennis courts, a tennis bubble, and a water park at the A.V. Symington Aquatics Center.
The small city of Vienna was founded in the 18th century and officially became a city in 1890. Today, Vienna is known as a calm and safe place to live, with well-developed infrastructure and proximity to the US capital. The town boasts numerous green parks and the renowned Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts, which hosts concerts and festivals.
The medium-sized playground has several areas for children of different ages, a play area, swings, and indoor and outdoor picnic tables. I love visiting Vienna because it often hosts various fairs, entertainment events, and a large farmers’ market. Some of the most interesting events I’ve seen are the Vienna Halloween Parade and the large Independence Day fireworks display, complete with live music, children’s entertainment, food trucks, and activities for the whole family!
Just a 10-minute drive from Vienna, the charming Meadowlark Botanical Garden is a picturesque spot where incredible peace and tranquility reign, perfect for a family getaway. There are convenient paths where children can ride bikes while parents enjoy the beauty of the manicured gardens, flowering plants, and ponds. Young visitors regularly attend engaging workshops where they can express their creativity and learn more about nature.
Also located within the garden is the Korean Public Bell Garden, the only one of its kind in the Western Hemisphere. It houses a unique bell crafted by Korean artisans and brought to Virginia as a symbol of friendship between the two countries.

The 11-acre Legacy Park playground is located in the new Brambleton development and is the hub of all local community activities.
Arguably the most fun farm in Virginia, Cox Farms is known for its seasonal festivals, farmers’ market, kid-friendly attractions, and beautiful surroundings. It is a family-friendly farm amusement park and a huge venue for themed events.

The park offers a variety of slides for every taste, from the laid-back Castle Slide to the thrilling Dino Slide and Volcano Slide, both wide and long. In the “Kiddie Zone,” little ones can play more relaxedly with a wooden train, mini-slides, a warm straw hill, rope swings, musical instruments, and shaded areas where they can rest. Children will also love the hayride – a cart ride through the farm with interesting scenes and scenery – and the Goat Village, a place to get up close and personal with goats and other animals.
This is a very popular attraction, so it’s best to purchase tickets online in advance. A ticket grants access to the park for the entire day, and if necessary, you can leave the park and return using a special bracelet.

Potomack Lakes Sportsplex in Sterling is a major sports complex in Loudoun County. It is renowned not only for its softball and soccer fields but also for its state-of-the-art playground, built with inclusive principles in mind. The playground is designed to be comfortable and engaging for children of all ages and abilities.

A special focus on accessibility is placed on the playground, with ADA-compliant equipment installed, allowing children with limited mobility to play alongside others. The playground features a dual-track ride for two people, a sensory maze that develops tactile and visual skills, and unique structures like the “viper swing,” a net-like swing designed for multiple participants.
The play area combines active areas with quiet corners for socializing and relaxation. This makes the playground suitable for both dynamic play and the development of social skills. It’s located next to the main sports fields and pavilion, allowing parents to keep an eye on their children during events or practices.
Overall, the children’s area at Potomack Lakes Sportsplex makes the complex more than just a sports facility; it is a true community center where families can spend time together, combining sports, walks, and games.
The playground at Clemyjontri Park opened in 2006 and was designed to be as safe as possible, accessible to children of all abilities. Ramps connect many structures to allow children in wheelchairs to move between levels. In 2010, the Liberty Swing was installed, allowing children to remain in their wheelchairs while swinging. A special surface is wheelchair-friendly and reduces the risk of injury.

The playground is divided into four “zones” rotating around a central carousel. The playground includes a picnic pavilion and rest areas with restrooms. The main parking and drop-off area is near the park entrance, and additional parking is available across from Langley Fork Park.
The Virginia State Parks website lists thirty parks with playgrounds where you can climb, slide, swing, and explore. Each park features colorful slides, swings, play panels, elevated walkways, ladders, and other obstacles that will challenge your child and provide hours of outdoor fun. Pocahontas State Park and Holliday Lake State Park feature playgrounds in the water, making sunbathing even more fun.
Only five playgrounds are listed for Northern Virginia:
