Maryland Renaissance Festival (abbreviated Rennfest) is one of the largest, longest-running, and most colorful festivals in the United States. Each year, Rennfest develops a storyline in which the action takes place in the fictional English settlement of Revel Grove. This year, the festival is dedicated to 1539, the period of Henry VIII’s reign and his intrigues.
During the festival, a whole world comes to life, spread out over 27 acres of picturesque grounds. Here, on ten colorful stages, more than two hundred artists perform – from wandering musicians and singers to theater troupes and acrobats, whose performances enthrall the audience in the atmosphere of ancient fairs. At the center of events rises a giant knightly tournament arena with 3,000 spectators, where the glitter of armor, the clanging of swords, and the thunder of hooves transport guests to the era of medieval battles.

The narrow streets of the festival are lined with over 140 artisan shops, each offering unique items from forged jewellery and leather bags to fine ceramics and period-style clothing. And for gourmets, there are 42 food and drink outlets where you can sample everything from juicy grilled steaks and freshly baked bread to aromatic spiced wines and refreshing drinks.
Before visiting the festival, be sure to check out the calendar of events – it’s like a treasure map, with each date holding its own amazing discoveries. Throughout the day, the streets and squares are filled with the sounds of lutes and drums, and on every corner, you can stumble upon a street show – sparks from whistling whips, the clanging of steel during fencing matches, and skillful puppets brought to life in the hands of masters.

Among the many spectacles, the royal ceremonies stand out: the solemn “Royal Welcome,” where His Majesty and his retinue greet guests in the best traditions of the Tudor court, and the touching “Closing Ceremony,” which closes the day with a firework of emotions. Fans of humor and theatrical liberties will appreciate modern productions—the satirical “Shakespeare’s Skum” and the witty duet “A Fool Named ‘O’ and LaLa.”
In addition to the main program, the festival offers special themed weekends so that everyone can feel like a part of history. For young guests, there is a “Children’s Weekend” with games and performances, where kids can try themselves in the role of little knights or court ladies. During the days of “Myths and Magic” the streets are filled with sorcerers, elves, legendary creatures, and the “Celtic Celebration” sounds with the rhythms of drums and the enchanting melody of bagpipes. In autumn, guests are greeted by the “Harvest Festival” – with lush wreaths of wildflowers, the aromas of fresh bread and sweet cider.
Every year, the festival attracts thousands of guests, many of whom come in unique costumes – their own or rented. This simple solution makes the experience brighter and the atmosphere even more exciting. All it takes is a little imagination and a willingness to immerse yourself in the spirit of the holiday to return home with great photos, unforgettable emotions, and memories that will delight you for many years to come.
