Silver Falls State Park, near Silverton, Oregon

Silver Falls Park is Oregon’s largest state park, a 9,000+ acre playground of fir forest, history, and cascading water. Its signature Trail of Ten Falls (a 7.2-mile loop) winds through lush canyon scenery and lets visitors hike near four of the dramatic waterfalls – most famously the 177-foot South Falls, a thunderous curtain you can experience from both front and back.

The park blends natural wonder with living history: many of its facilities, including the rustic lodge and concession area, date to Civilian Conservation Corps development in the 1930s. Ancient old-growth firs survive alongside regrown forest, creating a layered, tranquil backdrop for hiking, camping, horse riding, and photography.

The recently opened accessible North Rim Trail and expanded North Canyon day-use area ensure that the canyon’s viewpoints – including North Falls – are accessible to a broader range of abilities, so grandparents, toddlers, or someone with a walking challenge can still be part of the shared wonder.

Beyond hiking, the park is a braided web of possibilities: mountain biking, horseback riding, and longer backcountry rambles weave through over 35 miles of trails; wildlife watching brings glimpses of deer, the occasional cautious black bear, or the flash of a Steller’s jay; fishing in Silver Creek offers quiet focus (with proper licensing); and for those who like to linger, camping under the trees – whether in tent/RV sites, historic cabins (some pet friendly), or the seasonal horse camp – extends the adventure into evenings around a fire. Junior Ranger activities in summer give kids a sense of stewardship, turning them from visitors into guardians of the forest.

Practical comforts thread through the wilderness: EV charging at South Falls, clean restrooms, free public Wi-Fi at the lodge, and thoughtful pet policies that preserve sensitive canyon trails while still welcoming leashed companions elsewhere.

Whether it’s a brisk day hike, a lazy picnic, a multi-day retreat, or a mix of active and reflective moments, the park sculpts time so that every step with friends or children becomes part of a shared story.
