Come experience the perfect blend of music, nature, and relaxation at Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts! Nestled in a serene woodland setting just outside Washington, D.C., Wolf Trap invites you to enjoy unforgettable live performances – from symphonies and jazz to opera and family-friendly shows – under the stars at the iconic Filene Center or inside the intimate, rustic Barns. Bring a picnic, unwind on the lawn, and make memories in a place where art and nature come together beautifully.

Wolf Trap opened its flagship venue, the Filene Center, in 1971. Since then, it has hosted nearly 4,000 performances by a wide range of acclaimed artists, including Van Cliburn, the National Symphony Orchestra, Diana Ross, Sting, and Wynton Marsalis. In 1981, Shouse expanded the park’s offerings by donating two 18th-century barns from New York to create The Barns at Wolf Trap, a smaller, acoustically superior venue that now hosts over 3,000 performances across genres such as opera, chamber music, and folk. The Children’s Theatre-in-the-Woods was also created as an open-air space to offer family-friendly performances in a natural woodland setting.

History

Catherine Filene Shouse, a trailblazing advocate for women and public service, acquired farmland west of Washington, D.C., in the 1930s and expanded it into a 168-acre estate. She used the land for agriculture, breeding animals, and hosting informal cultural gatherings. In 1966, at age 71, Shouse donated 100 acres of her land and funds to the U.S. government with the vision of creating a unique outdoor venue where nature and the arts could coexist. This led to the establishment of Wolf Trap Farm Park, the first and only national park dedicated to the performing arts, preserving the land from development and creating a legacy of accessible cultural enrichment.
